Gaantapaswini chi Tapogatha (Marathi)/ Gaantapaswini: A musical Odyssey (English)
It is a musical epic journey of an eminent vocalist Mogubai Kurdikar who was titled as
Gaantapaswini. Mogubai was a remarkable vocalist who led a life of quiet tenacity and
resistance. Born in an era when, women singers were not treated with much respect,
and when gurus preferred to pass on the Gharana tradition mainly within their own
families, learning was an immeasurably tough task. The epic tells us, despite all odds
and hardships, whom did she learnt music from and how did she emerged as an
uncompromising purist and a firm believer in the gharana ideology of the Jaipur Atrawali
gharana. Out of several doyenne singers in India, why only Mogubai is called
GaanTapaswini? This 45 minute audio visual sheds light on the life and work of how a
woman born in an ordinary family herself rose to become the legendary singer
Padmabhushan Gaanatapaswini.
